Volunteers are needed to become part of the County Animal Response Team (CART) that addresses emergency animal sheltering during an evacuation event. An informational session has been scheduled that will give participants an overview of the purpose, scope, and intent of the team and a summary of CART’s areas of responsibility. The session will be held Thursday, May 6 at 7 pm, in the Council Office Building, First Floor Auditorium, 100 Maryland Avenue, Rockville.

Montgomery County’s offices of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, along with the Animal Services Division in the Police Department, are working together to plan for the needs of domestic pets in the event of a large-scale emergency situation that includes evacuation of residents to an emergency shelter. Pet owners, like other residents, may be forced to evacuate and should have a plan or sheltering option in place.  CART’s mission will be to educate the public and have plans in place that address the welfare of animals during an evacuation emergency.

Individuals attending the May 6 informational session can fill out an application to serve as a member of the County Animal Response Team.

For more information, or to RSVP for the May 6 meeting, send an email to sandy.dornsife@montgomerycountymd.gov.

The Escondido Humane Society (Escondido, California 92027) is asking the community to go green this Earth Day by adopting a “recycled” pet from its shelter.

To make it easier to go green, the Humane Society will be having a “Recycled Pets are the Best” special from April 22 to 25. During those days, regular adoption fees will be slashed in half for all adult animals.

Daisy (Pet ID #43074)

Special fees will be $55 for adult dogs and cats (6 months to 7 years); $27.50 for senior dogs and cats (7 years and up); and $22.50 for rabbits of all ages. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, up‐to‐date vaccinations, dog licensing (Escondido, San Marcos and Poway areas only) and more.

Just a few reasons why “recycled” pets are the best:

  • Adoption fees are much less than the price of an animal from a pet store or breeder. Plus, all adoptable animals at the Escondido Humane Society are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and examined by a veterinarian.
  • Adopting a mature dog or cat means that you avoid the demanding stage of raising a puppy or kitten. With a mature pet you also have a good idea of the animal’s temperament and know its adult size. Mature pets are often house‐trained and may even have some basic training.
  • No. 1 reason to adopt from a shelter: The rewarding feeling associated with saving an animal’s life. When you adopt from a shelter, you are helping to save two lives – the life of the animal you adopt, and yours.

The Escondido Humane Society Adoption Center, located at 3450 E. Valley Parkway, is open from 10 am to 5 pmm seven days a week. Call (760) 888‐2247 or visit the Escondido Humane Society web site for more information.
