Prior to joining the Humane Society of Missouri, I practiced veterinary medicine in the St. Louis area for over 30 years. In addition to caring for tens of thousands of family pets, I provided professional services to more than 100 dog breeders, from casual hobbyists to large-scale operations housing 200 plus dogs. I also worked with multiple local pet stores caring for the dogs and puppies in their facilities. All of these experiences, both good and bad, have had a profound influence on my personal decision to support Proposition B.

Dr. Steven Schwartz examines a dog rescued from a puppy mill.

When I became a veterinarian I took an oath to use my knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and the relief of animal suffering.  I am convinced Proposition B will do just that, alleviate the suffering of animals in Missouri’s dog breeding facilities and provide immediate and dramatic improvements in the health and welfare of dogs and puppies housed within those facilities.

When: Saturday, November 6, 2010 beginning at 10:00 am, 12:00 p.m. Memorial Service and Vendor Fair

Where: Atlantic Avenue and Harding Street (by Houghton Park), South of Artesia Blvd., Long Beach, California 90805

Once again Friends of Long Beach Animals and Long Beach Animal Care Services are marching in the Long Beach Veterans Day Parade in appreciation of all our Veterans. They will be marching proudly honoring all our service men and women, past and present, as well as in honor of our WAR DOGS.

FOLBA is enlisting all patriotic dogs and their guardians to join in honoring America’s War Dogs and ALL our brave veterans by marching in the parade Saturday, November 6th in North Long Beach. The Dogs of War are our country’s forgotten heroes. Thousands of dogs bravely protected our soldiers in the Vietnam War and were left behind as war surplus. Only about 200 were brought back to the United States. War Dogs have been used throughout history and deserve to be remembered.

Line-up is on Atlantic Avenue between Harding St. and Artesia Blvd. Go to the check-in booth in the park near the corner of Harding and Atlantic and ask where FOLBA/LBACS is located. Look for the group with the dogs or the vehicles pictured below. Parade starts promptly at 10:00 a.m. Get there early to find parking which is available on the local streets. Take into consideration a large portion of Atlantic will be blocked off.

Please bring water for your pets and remember there will be loud bands attending, so consider your dog’s personality and how noise affects him or her. All licensed, vaccinated and well behaving dogs are welcome. Also, keep in mind that horses are in the parade which can upset a dog’s regular personality.

Sid Korpi has combined her decades of varied professional experience — as an editor, writer, journalist, English teacher, actor, and ordained minister/animal chaplain — with her lifelong devotion to the animal companions who have blessed and shared her life in creating Good Grief: Finding Peace After Pet Loss.

Surviving a “tsunami of loss” in her own life led to her discovery of spiritual truths that brought her strength and facilitated her heart’s healing. She felt compelled to share these things with others who suffer — often in isolation — from the passing on of their very dearest nonhuman friends, their pets.

She notes, “Unfortunately, our society on the whole discounts their grief as frivolous since they’ve ‘merely lost an animal.’ People often report that they got over the death of a fellow human being easier than they did that of their pet simply because they were given permission to really grieve over the human and thus found the support they needed to process those feelings. This same support is often sorely lacking when the intense feelings of sorrow are a result of pet loss.”
