From Farm Sanctuary
Over the years, Farm Sanctuary has been working to enact groundbreaking laws and policies to protect farm animals through ballot initiatives. With the help of members and supporters like you, our Anti-Confinement Campaign has achieved victories for farm animals across the nation and banned several of the most egregious confinement systems on factory farms. Now, we are excited to announce the launch of an important ballot measure in Washington state to protect egg-laying hens from cruel battery cage confinement.
Along with a coalition of animal welfare, environmental and food safety groups, we recently submitted language to the secretary of state to place a statewide measure on Washington’s November ballot that would require egg-laying hens to at least have enough room to turn around and extend their wings. Nearly 6 million egg-laying hens in Washington spend the majority of their lives in cages so small that each hen has less space than a sheet of paper and can barely move. This measure seeks to prevent this cruel confinement and ban the sale of eggs from battery caged hens in the state.
