From the Humane Society of Missouri

As the new year begins, we are once again filled with hope for homeless and hurting pets throughout the Missouri area. Why?

The reason is quite simple: friends like you.

Your caring and compassion make it possible for the Humane Society of Missouri (St. Louis, Missouri 63110) to rescue, protect, and find forever homes for deserving cats, dogs, puppies, kittens, and other animals.

Thanks to generous friends like you, in the last 12 months we helped more than 85,000 pets in our community. Last year, your support helped the Humane Society of Missouri:

  • Place more than 8,000 pets in loving homes
  • Spay or neuter more than 10,000 pets to prevent overpopulation
  • Educate nearly 20,000 children and adults about responsible pet care
  • AND SO MUCH MORE!

But our job is far from over. Hundreds and possibly thousands of pets still need us right now. Some have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Others can no longer be kept by their families.

That’s why I’m urging you to renew your support in 2011.

Please make a gift today to help make this a year of hope for needy pets who want nothing more than to love and be loved in return.

Q. Do you have any pointers about how to celebrate Valentine’s Day with my pets?

That means not only dark chocolate-which can affect neurologic and cardiac function-but also light and milk chocolate, which can cause inflammation of the pancreas. Don’t let pets near sweet treats. Gum and candy contain sweeteners that can cause hypoglycemia. Also, watch it with the floral tributes! All species of lily are potentially fatal to cats, so if you’re sending flowers specify no lilies. And try to keep all flowers and plants out of reach. If roses are part of the equation, keep the thorns away from your pets’ sensitive feet.
