From PAWS (Lynwood, Washington 98087)

Your action is needed today to stop SSB 5356 in the Washington State House of Representatives. This bill would grant the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) full authority to extend hound hunting of cougars to sport hunters for another five years in designated counties. Although WDFW presents SSB 5356 as a conservation bill that also protects public safety, it’s really a bill which goes directly against the will of the voters and is driven by misinformation and weak science.

The companion version of this bill (HB 1124) was successfully stopped. We now need your help to stop SSB 5356 from passing.

Please take 5 minutes today to tell your representatives you oppose SSB 5356:

  • Enter your address to identify your district and representatives.
  • Call/ e-mail (or both) your representatives urging them to vote NO on SSB 5356, allowing the hunting of cougars using dogs, on the full House floor.

HELPFUL HINTS: Calling is fast, easy and very impactful. Legislative staff will take your call. Follow up with a polite e-mail to thank them, and to solidify your action. To avoid forms, use the legislator e-mail directory.

During her reign as America’s domestic icon, Martha Stewart has shown millions of people how to baste a turkey, braise a lamb, and roast a chicken, but on Wednesday, March 30th, the woman who wrote the book (literally) on home entertaining devoted an entire hour-long episode of “The Martha Stewart Show” to the pleasures and benefits of a vegan lifestyle. Stewart’s groundbreaking “Vegan Show” featured interviews and cooking demonstrations with some of the country’s most influential vegans, including a sit down with Farm Sanctuary President and Co-Founder Gene Baur, who informed viewers of the suffering endured by animals raised for food on factory farms.

No meat, no milk, no eggs … no problem!

To demonstrate just how easy and delicious compassionate living can be, Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone, who went vegan more than 10 years ago after visiting Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter, helped Stewart make vegan fruit & nut bars, and former model turned healthy-living guru Kathy Freston shared her tips for adding more vegan meals into your diet, directly from her book Veganist.

This year, Farm Sanctuary, the organization responsible for bringing farm animal issues into the mainstream consciousness celebrates its 25th anniversary. As the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, Farm Sanctuary urged passage of the first U.S. laws to protect animals on farms, initiated the first cruelty convictions at stockyards and slaughterhouses, and established the first and largest rescue and refuge network for farm animals in North America. Along the way, the organization has encouraged the public to embrace compassionate living through public campaigns, like getting the first veggie burger on Burger King menus and welcoming visitors to its sanctuaries, where thousands of people have had transformational experiences — including Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone, who became a vegan after a visit to the New York Shelter.

This special milestone, and all that has been achieved to promote compassion for farm animals in the U.S., will be commemorated by celebrities, supporters, public figures, authors and corporate leaders through a series of special anniversary-themed events across the country, including two star-studded, black-tie galas in New York (May 14) and Los Angeles (September 24). The organization has received broad support for past efforts and events from Ellen DeGeneres, Bob Barker, Martha Stewart, Betty White, Forest Whitaker, David Duchovny, Bill Maher, Mary Tyler Moore, Kristen Bell, Emily Deschanel, Kim Basinger, Alicia Silverstone, Ginnifer Goodwin, Biz Stone, Daryl Hannah, James Cromwell, Loretta Swit, Chevy Chase, Fred Willard, Valerie Harper, Marilu Henner, Mariel Hemingway, Chrissie Hynde, Moby, Kevin Nealon, Joan Jett, Paul Sorvino, and countless others who care about farm animals.

More than 95% of the American public believe animals deserve some protection, and 65% believe farmed animals should be treated humanely and legally protected (source).

The Iowa Legislature is ignoring public opinion and introducing Senate File 341 and House File 431, bills that would criminalize whistleblowers from coming forth with evidence of mistreatment on farms. (Note: House File 431 passed the House on March 15, 2011.) Specifically, the bill would make it a felony to record treatment of animals on a farm without the owner’s permission.

From the Humane Society of Boulder Valley (Boulder, Colorado 80301)

We know that our dogs need daily exercise, but our kitty friends need physical activity as well! Toys that work with a cat’s natural stalking, pouncing and chasing instincts can be a lot of fun and provide a good workout. Plus, watching your feline jump and twist in the air can be pretty entertaining, too!

A favorite of our trainers is the Da Bird toy as most cats find it irresistable. It has a hard plastic handle and long string with interchangeable attachments, including feathers that have a twirling action mimicking the movement of a live bird. This toy is great for cats of all ages and provides hours of mental and physical enrichment. Just remember that this toy should only be used under supervision as the string could be a hazard if your cat is left alone with it.

If you’d like to bring the Da Bird home for your kitty, stop by the Sonnyside Retail Store in our shelter lobby. It sells for $7.49, and we have 6 attachments ranging in price from $2.49 to $4.99 that include feathers, faux fur, streamers and a fun mouse toy!
