The weekend of April 29 – May 1 will be memorable for many reasons, but it was downright life-changing for 31 homeless pets who all have new homes now. The Heart of America Humane Society (Overland Park, Kansas 66282) participated in PetSmart Charities’ semi-annual Adopt-A-Thon that weekend, with extended adoption hours spanning all three days.
On Friday night, some sleepy volunteers who had been up since 4 am to watch the royal wedding coverage from London were at the PetSmart in Overland Park with their foster dogs and cats. That night, one lucky dog and one lucky kitty found their forever homes.
The weather cooperated on Saturday, and volunteers with fosters and pets from Prairie Paws Animal Shelter in Ottawa enjoyed the sunshine or relaxed in the shade under the big white tent set up outside the PetSmart in Overland Park. Inside the store, adoptable kitties greeted customers as they came in, as well as in the cat adoption center. On Saturday, 13 dogs and nine cats found their homes.
Sunday was a cold and overcast day, but dedicated volunteers were out again to help with twice the number of dogs who came up from the shelter. The weather kept people home, too, but there were still adoptions. On Sunday, six dogs and one cat were adopted, plus two dogs went into foster care.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of HAHS volunteers, that’s a total of 31 pets who now have families to love them (and they can entertain), and who will have the long and happy lives that they deserve. Congratulations to all the new adopters, and thank you for opening your hearts and homes to these wonderful pets. We wish you much happiness!
