From Pets Alive (Middletown, New York 10940)

When: Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 10 am to 4 pm; Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 9 am to noon

Where: Pets Alive, 363 Derby Road, Middletown, New York 10940

This year, the yard sale will feature a Rock Star Corner! Yes, our favorite couple, Rob and Marisol Thomas, have donated a car-load of items which will have their own special area at the sale.

Also new this year are vendors! We opened the event up to local vendors so in addition to the traditional yard sale items, we will have new items too. Here are a few of the vendor products joining us on Saturday: Avon, Pampered Chef, Handmade Wood Items, Photography and Flower Arrangements.

We’ve always had a bake sale table which is a great hit so this year we’re adding to the fun. A lemonade stand will be run by wonderful 4-H Kids PLUS Dippin’ Dots will be selling their ice cream!

Of course, the traditional yard sale items will be available for sale: Clothes, Shoes, Handbags, Toys, Housewares, Books, Craft Items, Jewelry, Kitchen Sink, etc.

Please come out and support the work of Pets Alive, and the hard work of all our volunteers who put this together!

From the American Veterinary Medical Association

Call your Senators and urge them to be an original cosponsor of the Veterinary Services Investment Act, which will help address our nation’s most pressing veterinary needs.

This bill was introduced during the last session of Congress and is now being reintroduced. The AVMA needs your help to get it passed in this Congress.

The bill would establish a grant program under the jurisdiction of the USDA to assist states in addressing their own unique veterinary workforce needs, from recruiting and retaining practicing veterinarians and veterinary technicians to work in underserved areas, to bolstering knowledge in food safety/protection and food animal medicine. After all, what is needed in one state may differ greatly from what is needed in another.

Congress wants to hear from you on these issues. Call your Senators and forward this alert to your colleagues. Together we can make a difference to the veterinary profession.

When: Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 11 am to 2 pm

Where: Warwick Animal Shelter, 250 Service Road, Warwick, Rhode Island

Visitors are encouraged to explore the shelter and visit with our adoptable cats and dogs and browse vendors with pet-themed merchandise. Refreshments and pastries will be available.

For more information or directions, please call 401-467-2692.

The Warwick Animal Shelter was completely flooded on March 30, 2010. All of the animals were evacuated safely but the building and its contents were not so lucky: everything inside the shelter was ruined by water, washed away or contaminated by sludge. Since that time, the shelter has been rebuilt and refurbished but some items are still being replaced.  In 2008, Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter installed an outdoor playpen for the dogs. It survived the flood but the shade canopies were destroyed. New permanent awnings costing several thousand dollars have just been installed. Additionally, there is an ongoing need for medical supplies, veterinary assistance, spay/neuter assistance and canned dog and cat food.

Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter fundraising efforts have installed central air conditioning in the dogs’ kennel and quarantine rooms, installed a 4-camera surveillance system around the outside of the shelter to deter theft of animals or abandonment of animals when the shelter is closed, installed the dogs’ outdoor playpen (50’ x 20”) which will help socialize and exercise sheltered dogs, installed a water filtration system which will filter high levels of iron from all the animals’ drinking water, installed epoxy floors in all of the cat rooms to deter disease and purchased a new washing machine to wash and sterilize bedding and towels. Spay/neuter assistance and veterinary assistance has saved countless animals’ lives. These projects have made the shelter animals be comfortable and happy; thereby making them more adoptable and most importantly, saving lives!
