From the Humane Society of Missouri (St. Louis, Missouri 63110)

The Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Response Team is hard at work sifting through the rubble in the tornado-ravaged town of Joplin, Missouri to find animals in distress and remove them from harm’s way.

The Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Response Team canvassed the area for animals in need.

Already, 70 dogs and cats have been transported from an overwhelmed veterinary clinic to the Joplin Humane Society, where all displaced animals are being sheltered. Multiple dogs and cats were also removed from abandoned properties and taken to safety.

These dogs are halfway home; now it’s your turn to do the other half!

If you’ve been thinking about adopting a dog, now’s the perfect time to do so! Adoption fees for all adult dogs (age 6 months and older) are half price now through May 31, 2011. Adoption includes spay/neuter, microchip, and collar, plus initial vaccinations and exam.

From the Dumb Friends League (Denver, Colorado 80231)

Tracy, Helton and Tulo were found wandering the streets a few days ago and brought to the Dumb Friends League for help. All three kittens are only 6 weeks old, meaning that they are too young for adoption right now. They are just three of the many pets looking for temporary homes.

You can open up your home and heart temporarily to help pets in need like Tracy, Helton and Tulo.

Why should you foster?

  • It’s rewarding. You truly make a hands-on difference for the pet you’re fostering, as well as the other homeless animals in our care.
  • There’s absolutely no cost. We provide foster families with everything needed: food, bedding, toys, cat litter and other supplies, as well as veterinary care.
  • It’s fun. You get all the enjoyment of owning a pet without the long-term commitment.

You decide how long you foster and what type of pet. We work with your schedule and needs.

What type of pets need foster care?

All kinds! Foster volunteers provide in-home care for pets until they are ready for adoption or space is available at one of our two shelters. Right now, we particularly need foster homes for adult cats.

Other pets needing foster care include:

  • Kittens and puppies that are too young for adoption
  • Mother cats and dogs nursing their litters
  • Pets recovering from illness or injury
  • Those needing extra socialization
  • Cats that would benefit being available for adoption via our Home Buddies program

Plus, we rely on foster homes to help provide needed space at our shelters for incoming animals.

From the Tree House Humane Society (Chicago, Illinois 60640)

Kari Johnson, our Targeted Trapping Coordinator, has organized a trapping project tonight near Pulaski and Division as part of our ongoing Targeted Trapping Project in 60651.

We’ve been given permission to set up traps in the yards of a couple of residents, and traps will also be set up in the alley behind the yards. Kari needs enough people to monitor the traps in the alley as well as the front yards and then a couple of people to alternate for snacks, bathroom, wandering down adjacent allies, etc.

If you can help, please e-mail Kari or call her at: 773-655-2241 for more details and directions.

Set-up is planned for 6:30. The plan is to stick around for a few hours or until all the cats are trapped if that comes first!

This would be a great learning experience for those new to trapping and a great opportunity for the seasoned trappers to share their wisdom as we continue to work to reduce the feral cat population in 60651.  Who’s in?

Thank you in advance for your consideration!
