Thousands of paws and feet pounded the pavement at the Dumb Friends League (Denver, Colorado 80231) Furry Scurry on May 7, all to support homeless pets in the community. The 18th annual Furry Scurry—the largest walk for animals in the nation—was held at Denver’s Washington Park and drew a record crowd.

More than 11,000 people and 5,000 dogs participated in the organization’s largest fundraiser. In addition to a two-mile walk for animals, pet lovers had the opportunity to meet adoptable pets, watch demonstrations, enjoy live music, enter in contests, and shop for pet-friendly goods and services at the Flea-less Market, which included nearly 150 vendors.

“The Furry Scurry is a celebration of the human-animal bond, but more importantly, it increases awareness about pets in need and helps raise much-needed funds so we can continue helping pets in need,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League.

Thanks to the community’s support, the Dumb Friends League raised $1,031,262—a new record for the event. The funds raised will help nearly 25,000 cats, dogs and other small pets, as well as benefit other programs and services for pets and people in Denver and surrounding areas.

Did you know that dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur, and pink skin, can sunburn?  Limit your dog’s exposure during the day and apply sunblock to his or her ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside.

Dogs are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness because they can only cool off by panting and through the pads in their feet. Even on seemingly mild days, an enclosed car can be deadly.  In a Stanford University study, when it was 72 degrees outside, a car’s internal temperature climbed to 116 degrees within one hour. Cracking a window has little impact on the temperature inside a car.

If you see dogs or children in distress, go to the closest store and ask the manager for help. If the owner cannot be found quickly, call Animal Control or the local police. Minutes can count so don’t hesitate to get involved but be careful about confronting the owner.

The Rutland County Humane Society (Pittsford, Vermont 05763) has a variety of programs to benefit the people and animals of Rutland County.
