These cats can bring a very special brand of love into your home and your life.

by Alicia Wright

On June 1, National Adopt-A-Cat month began again. Simply put, this promotion was created to bring focus to the need for feline adoptions during the spring…a time when shelters around the country regularly become inundated with homeless cats and litters of kittens. According to the American Humane Association, the estimated population of homeless felines in the US is 70 million; just 5 million shy of the estimated number of households that already own one or more cats.

The Connecticut Humane Society (Newington, Connecticut 06111) is fortunate to have the support of an untold number of people. This generosity helps make it possible to provide quality medical care, shelter care, and placement options for the thousands of animals that come through its doors. Consequently, CHS is able to successfully work with and subsequently place cats that have a variety of different special needs.

Cats that have the challenges listed below can all provide their adoptive families with a great deal of love, companionship, and camaraderie.  In fact, some may even become more closely bonded in the long run because they will regularly seek and need the extra protection that their human families will provide. Those families that make the commitment to going the extra mile will never regret their decision to bring a special needs cat into their lives.

Blindness: To keep blind cats safe and help them adapt to loss of sight:

  • Make sure to keep them indoors or in a specially screened in area if they are to have outside access.
  • Don’t move your furniture around.
  • Don’t allow your floors to get cluttered and obstructed.
  • Consider padding the legs of your furniture to prevent injury.
  • Exercise patience; many cats will be reluctant to leave their beds when first afflicted as that area will be the most familiar to them.

Deafness: To keep deaf cats safe and help them adapt to loss of hearing:

  • Make sure to keep them indoors or in a specially screened in area if they are to have outside access.
  • Never sneak up on your cat when they are sleeping as deaf cats sleep more soundly than those that can hear.
  • Use visual stimulation to get their attention like laser pointers or flashlights.
  • Provide them with extra “towers” to climb.
  • Deaf cats appreciate opportunities to see their surroundings more clearly.
  • Exercise patience; many cats will vocalize more than they did in the past.

From the Washington Humane Society (Washington, DC 20012)

We would like to thank everyone who supported us in the Washington Humane Society’s 24th Annual Bark Ball at the Washington Hilton June 4! This year’s Ball, the only black-tie event for Washington, DC’s movers and shakers and their four-legged friends, was a huge success!

During this special evening, which honored the great work done by the Washington Humane Society, our wonderful guests and their canine companions were treated to cocktails, a delicious dinner, a silent and live auction and a Celebrity Parade which featured adoptable dogs escorted by local media personalities.

Thanks to the help of our generous donors and supporters, this year’s event raised over $350,000 – a new record – to support the critical programs and services that benefit thousands of homeless, lost and abused animals in our Nation’s Capital.

When Jan Van Dusen appeared before a U.S. Tax Court judge and a team of Internal Revenue Service lawyers more than a year ago, there was more at stake than her tax deduction for taking care of 70 stray cats.

Hanging in the balance were millions of dollars in annual tax deductions by animal-rescue volunteers across the nation—and some needed clarity on the treatment of volunteers’ unreimbursed expenses for 1.55 million other IRS-recognized charities.

Early this month, Ms. Van Dusen learned she had won her case. “I was stunned,” she said. “It feels great to have established this precedent.”

The Tax Court allowed her to take a charitable deduction for expenses she incurred while taking care of the cats in her home for an IRS-approved charity, Fix Our Ferals. Among the $12,068 in expenses she deducted: food, veterinarian bills, litter, a portion of utility bills, and other items such as paper towels and garbage bags.

Don’t miss the fun at DCHS Kids Extravaganza for animal lovers ages 4 and older!
You and your young animal lover can watch Truly Remarkable Loon’s amazing juggling feats, clap your hands for the dancing dogs, construct pine cone bird feeders, have your face painted in your favorite design, play water games, defy gravity in the bouncy house, and more! Mark your calendar to attend the DCHS Kids Extravaganza on Saturday, June 18, 2011, from 1-4 p.m. at Dane County Humane Society, 5132 Voges Road, Madison (rain or shine).

(The canine freestyle dancing demonstration by Teacher’s Pet Training Academy will be from 2:00-2:15 p.m. Truly Remarkable Loon will be performing from 3:00-3:30 p.m.)

Each year, young people in the community help DCHS in many different ways. They conduct food drives, put up posters of available animals, and run lemonade stands on hot summer days to benefit homeless animals. This is Dane County Humane Society’s way to say thanks to their current young friends and connect with new young animal lovers.

This event is free, but donations such as bleach, canned dog food or cat food, and empty aluminum cans will be happily accepted to help the animals! (Please don’t bring your own pets to this event.)
