From the Connecticut Humane Society (Newington, Connecticut 06111)

Due to Hurricane Irene, the Connecticut Humane Society had to close its shelters from one to several days, depending on the location. These closures, coupled with the regular summertime influx of homeless cats, have us busting at the seams.

These beautiful kitties are all looking to find their new forever homes ASAP. To help speed them on their way, we will be offering discounted adoptions now through Sunday at all of our shelter locations.

  • All cats over 5 years old – now just $5!
  • Felines between 3 and 5 years old will be just $20.

Adopters should come prepared with either permission from their landlords or proof of home ownership. Don’t forget to bring all your family members! More information on adoption benefits and requirements.

Help us continue our lifesaving work. Make a donation today!

Hurricane Update Report: All Connecticut Humane Society locations are now open for normal business hours.  The Waterford shelter continues to have no electricity but they are powered by a generator.  Waterford phones continue to be out of service. Interested adopters should call this number for adoption information:  860-287-2946.

From Catskill Animal Sanctuary (Saugerties, New York 12477)

Though New York escaped with less damage then predicted, CAS staff and volunteers are still putting long hours this week cleaning up fallen trees and crushed fences left by Irene. During the storm geese, ducks, rabbits, and sheep were moved into the main barn for safety. All of us were happy to see the sunshine Monday morning, despite the work that lay ahead.

We wish all our friends impacted by Irene a quick return to normalcy, and remind everyone that until humanity radically alters its lifestyle, our fragile planet will grow increasingly unstable in response to our disrespect.

From the Animal Adoption & Rescue Foundation (Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27103)

Every year, AARF has a great fundraiser known as the AARF Companion Calendar.  This is where we get to showcase our adorable pets, foster animals, rescues, etc. For anyone not familiar with this calendar, we sell the dates of the months, collect monthly sponsors, sell ad spaces, page sponsors and even try and recruit a sponsor for the entire calendar.

We have lots of fun putting this calendar together. Each year we try and do something special and this year will be no exception. We plan to have a contest for the cover. All pictures submitted will be considered. There will be a committee that will judge all the pictures and narrow the selection down to ten. Those ten pictures will be posted on our website and at the AARF house. We will then ask people to vote on their favorite and the votes cost $1.00 each. You can vote as many times as you like, but remember, each vote costs $1.00. We will accept votes up until the day we send the calendar off to the printers (around November 15th). The picture with the most votes will proudly be displayed on our cover along with a short story and background information about the winner.

The deadline for submitting your pictures, reservation form and money is October 1, 2011. The instructions are on the form. Since this is a huge project, we would like to ask for your help. It is rather simple, please forward this email to everyone you think might be interested. Pass around the flyers at work, the dog park, and anywhere you feel an animal lover might go.

Help us make this a huge success so that AARF can continue to aid homeless and helpless cats and dogs in the greater Winston-Salem area; providing rescue and adoption services, information, and education while encouraging the human/animal bond.

From the North Shore Animal League America (Port Washington, New York 11050)

As Hurricane Irene struck the East Coast, the Animal League deployed Emergency Rescue units and ensured the safety of over 800 animals. We were able to pull animals in need out of harm’s way and provide support to shelter partners and evacuees during the storm.

  • Before the hurricane, we deployed 5 Mobile Emergency Rescue units throughout Long Island, NY to take animals out of shelters in areas where the storm’s impact was expected to be most severe. We sheltered and cared for these animals at our Port Washington, NY headquarters during the storm.
  • We deployed our largest Mobile Rescue unit to an emergency shelter for people and families that were forced to evacuate. When that first unit was quickly filled with animals, a second Mobile Rescue unit was quickly deployed to that location to care for close to 100 animals.
  • Since the storm passed, we have safely reunited every pet we housed, at the emergency evacuation shelter, with their families.
  • Through the tireless work of our staff and volunteers, the 650 homeless animals in our care, along with those rescued from our shelter partners, are safe and doing very well.

Our Emergency Rescue Teams continue to be ready to assist shelter partners impacted by Hurricane Irene.

Only through your vital support can we continue to act at a moment’s notice to help save animals’ lives.

Please donate today so we can continue to respond natural disasters, national emergencies or whenever animals are at risk.

The Kansas Humane Society (Wichita, Kansas 67219) takes great pride in giving second chances to animals who so deserve a better life.

Jasmine was barely a kitten herself. At the tender age of 9 months she found herself pregnant and alone. Her owners never bothered to have her spayed and when they realized she was pregnant they drove her out into the country and abandoned her on the roadside.

She found her way to a small farmhouse and settled in under the porch. It was there she had her kittens. When the homeowners discovered the tiny visitors, they immediately called upon the Kansas Humane Society for help.  Jasmine and her four kittens were brought to our shelter and here they waited.  One of our wonderful foster moms gently placed the terrified Jasmine and her litter onto a warm towel in a pet carrier and shuffled them off to her home.

When the kittens were old enough, they were returned to the shelter to be placed for adoption. Jasmine’s foster mom had fallen in love, so after Jasmine was spayed, her foster home became her forever home! Her kittens found great homes too, but this summer KHS will take in about 60 homeless pets a day.

You can help give more animals, like Jasmine and her kittens the second chance they deserve.  Your gift will provide vital support to our foster care and adoption programs.

Thank you for caring enough to give these beautiful animals a second chance at life.

Residents of flood-ravaged Minot, North Dakota, remain displaced due to major flooding this past summer. To create more space for four-legged evacuees, the American Humane Association’s Red Star™ Animal Emergency Services team transported nine shelter dogs to the Dumb Friends League (Denver, Colorado 80231) on Aug. 19.

In early August the Englewood-based American Humane Association dispatched their Red Star™ Animal Emergency Services team to Minot in order to help shelter and care for approximately 500 displaced pets in the affected area. Now, the area animal shelter needs to provide additional space for incoming animals. They expect some pets currently housed at a temporary shelter to be relinquished by their owners who have been unable able to make other arrangements. To offer assistance, the Red Star team drove the nine dogs 850 miles in an air-conditioned trailer from Minot to Denver.

The dogs are of various breed mixes. Some may become available for adoption in the next few days.

Dog adoption fees range from $75 to $250 and include a spay/neuter surgery, microchip ID implant, initial vaccinations and a free office visit with a participating veterinarian.

Interested adopters can view all pets in need of homes online as well as visit the Dumb Friends League Quebec Street shelter in Denver or the Buddy Center in Castle Rock during adoption hours. Both shelters are open seven days a week.

Coastland Center has tens of thousands visitors each month and the Humane Society Naples (Naples, Florida 34101) is overrun with animals who need homes. An agreement has been made and the Humane Society Naples is pleased to announce the establishment of a satellite adoption center within the mall.

Michael Simonik, the Executive Director for the Humane Society Naples states, “Part of our mission statement is to reach out to the community to encourage them to adopt pets. This satellite adoption center enables the public to view and adopt more pets, which in turn will save the lives of many more orphaned animals.”

In the last few years, financial hardship has led to the surrender of hundreds of animals. Bursting at the seams, the shelter has steadily increase the adoption rate but sadly there is only so much room. Often pet owners who wish to surrender their pets must go on a waiting list. Sometimes it takes months to find a spot for these pets.

Coastland Center is located at 1900 Tamiami Trail North, Naples, Florida 34102. The mall management and the Humane Society Naples are proud to announce this joint venture of bringing in shelter pets to Coastland Center. The mall satellite adoption center for the Humane Society Naples is located near Sears.

The opening of the Humane Society Naples mall satellite adoption center is September 15th, 2011. Hours of operation will be 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
