Montgomery County Humane Society (Rockville, Maryland 20850) is partnering with the Montgomery County Animal Services Division, the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, and The American Red Cross to prepare volunteers who will help in the event pets need to be sheltered during an emergency. Current volunteers were prepared over the past weekend during Hurricane Irene, in the first activation of the county’s pet-friendly emergency shelter.
The primary goals of the Montgomery County Animal Response Team (CART) include: community education, training for members, and managing a temporary shelter for pets. This group has volunteer opportunities for individuals with animal handling and related skills as well as public relations and teaching experience. Interested volunteers should contact Captain Michael Wahl, Director of the Montgomery County Animal Services Division, or Chuck Crisostomo, Planning Chief for the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
