Pets in Lexington will have a better chance of finding a loving home thanks to a partnership between the Lexington Humane Society (Lexington, Kentucky 40504), the largest nonprofit adoption agency in Central Kentucky, and nonprofit PetSmart Charities, Inc., the largest funder of companion animal-welfare efforts in North America. The two have teamed up with support from PetSmart, Inc. to open an enhanced pet-adoption center inside the Hamburg Crossing PetSmart® store in Lexington. This is the 7th adoption center of this kind in the United States.

“We are so honored and excited to expand our relationship with Petsmart Charities, all in our effort to promote adoption as the best option when selecting a pet” says Susan Malcomb, president of the Lexington Humane Society. “Surveys have shown the majority of individuals are reluctant to visit shelters to explore adoption because they are overwhelmed and saddened by the amount of homeless animals available for adoption. Satellite adoption centers such as this provide a perfect solution to this concern and to occupy such a state-of-the-art facility is a blessing.”

This new enhanced adoption center will provide even greater space for animals cared for by the Lexington Humane Society, providing an across town location for those interested on selecting a furry friend.

“These enhanced adoption centers provide homeless pets with a comfortable place to stay before they find their forever homes,” said Susana Della Maddalena, vice president and executive director of nonprofit PetSmart Charities, Inc. “By collaborating with strong organizations like the Lexington Humane Society, we are able to promote pet adoptions and reduce euthanasia rates in local communities.”

The new adoption center, which officially opened on 10/1, occupies about 1900 square feet. PetSmart Charities funded 100 percent of the build-out costs for the new center and PetSmart is not charging any rent.

The Lexington Humane Society will fully staff the enhanced adoption center, which will house approximately 40 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. About 25 pets are expected to be adopted from the new adoption center location every week!

From Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (Walnut Creek, California 94598)

Nineteen pint-sized Chihuahuas and their human companions sat anxiously in the ARF clinic with little elbow room, despite having very small limbs. Not a typical day for the surgical team however; an exciting start for the launch of ARF’s low-cost and free spay/neuter surgeries to the local community.

Peppita, a precious two-year-old, fawn-colored Chihuahua, obviously had delivered a few litters before she found her way to ARF. Mistakenly, her owners thought there was a high demand for Chihuahuas and wanted to make a little extra money by breeding Peppita and selling her pups. What they later learned was the California shelters are full of Chihuahuas on death row, and they found themselves with eight palm-sized, wiggly puppies they could not sell. Sitting across from Peppita was Chester, a fluffy Chihuahua-mix, who repeatedly ventured out each time the neighbor’s dog was in heat. His guardian decided it was finally time to neuter him after he was almost hit by a car on his last adventure.

Stories like this are all too common. Puppy mills and backyard breeders try to capitalize on the Chihuahua’s spike in popularity as a pop culture icon and the desire to emulate celebrities toting the purse-sized pups. Thirty percent of the dogs in public shelters are Chihuahuas, quickly surpassing pit bulls. By spaying nineteen little Chihuahuas, ARF may have prevented the potential births of as many as one million dogs or more, had their breeding been left unchecked. Many of these puppies would have little chance of survival, roaming the streets or destined for an over-crowded public shelter.

ARF’s spay and neuter programs are more critical than ever before and the demand is rising. ARF altered more than 573 pets so far this year and 236 pet guardians are now on our waiting list, desperate to participate in low-cost or free spay and neuter days. They want to do the right thing, and need help to stop unwanted litters.

Spay and neuter programs are just one of the many ways ARF is helping stop the problem at its source to reduce future numbers of homeless animals. Fix Days are made possible thanks to the contribution of generous donors like you. Please help ARF continue to make a difference by donating today so one million more deaths can be prevented.

The Montgomery County Humane Society (Rockville, Maryland 20850) would like to remind you to take the following precautions to keep your pets safe and happy on Halloween.

Halloween masks and costumes can scare pets who could escape unnoticed through a frequently opened door. Keep your pets in a quiet room, away from trick-or-treaters. Make sure that your pets are wearing identification tags or are microchipped.

Halloween masks and costumes can scare pets who could escape unnoticed through a frequently opened door. Keep your pets in a quiet room, away from trick-or-treaters. Make sure that your pets are wearing identification tags or are microchipped.

Felines do face other life-and-death issues around Halloween: Pranksters can abuse or even kill black cats in some ritualistic way. Even cats of other colors may not be safe if left outdoors on October 31, when the line between tricks and animal cruelty gets horribly blurred in some people’s minds.

Chocolate can be fatal to pets. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Keep candy out of your pets’ reach. How much can kill? The AAHA says four to 10 ounces of milk chocolate, or one-half to an ounce of baking chocolate, can kill a small dog like a toy poodle. For medium-sized dogs, such as a cocker spaniel, one to one-and-a-half pounds of milk chocolate, or two to three ounces of baking chocolate, can be fatal. And for large breeds, two to four-and-a-half pounds of milk chocolate, or four to eight ounces of baking chocolate, can kill.

A lit jack-o-lantern or candles could singe your pets’ fur, or prove a fire hazard if your pet knocks them over.

If your pet does escape, call your local animal control agency and shelters immediately.

Imperial Cat announces that they’re yet again expanding their popular line of Scratch ‘n Shapes to include even more Halloween themed scratchers. Their high-quality, eco-friendly and natural feline lifestyle products’ new fall inspired line will include festive pumpkin shapes, a spooky fishbone, a hanging skeleton, and several other spooky prints.

“We extended our line of products to include more holiday themed designs so pet parents can add to their festive décor without bringing in potentially hazardous decorations,” said Kristie Hamilton, Imperial Cat’s Director of Sales. “Traditional decorations can be choking hazards, but with our latest seasonal additions, owners can add to their holiday décor with pet-friendly decorations that specifically cater to their cat’s needs and lifestyle.”

Imperial Cat’s popular line of Scratch ‘n Shapes were developed to satisfy the feline’s instinctive need to scratch while simultaneously providing a place for the cat to stretch, play or even sleep! And thanks to the horizontal and hanging variations, pet owners can choose the shape and style that fits their cat’s scratching preference and their home’s space.

Scratch ‘n Shapes are made in the USA from 100 percent post consumer recycled materials and are 100 percent recyclable after kitty’s use. The honeycomb texture of the Scratch ‘n Shapes offers the feel of natural tree bark, so cats will instinctively sink their claws into the scratchers, instead of home furnishings. Plus, each scratcher includes a bag of Certified Organic Catnip to encourage the cat to play and to entice him to return often.

And to compliment the new scratchers, check out Imperial Cat’s coordinating Halloween themed Cat ‘n Around plush toys. Filled with Organic Catnip, the new Cat ‘n Around seasonal characters include a candy corn shape, a Frankenstein figure and a spooky ghost, and are made in the USA. Prices start at $9.95 for the new Scratch ‘n Shapes and $5.95 for the new Cat ‘n Around toys.
