Nevada Humane Society (Reno, Nevada 89502) is currently seeking Foster Parents for the hundreds of kittens who are turning up in the shelter. The Foster Program was created for animals that are too young or need special care before they can be placed in permanent loving homes. It gives these special-needs animals a better chance of survival and opens up space at the shelter so more lives can be saved.

Some kittens are with their moms, some need to be bottle fed, while others are already eating on their own and just need to reach two pounds in weight so they can be spayed or neutered and adopted. Experience is not required and NHS provides on-the-job training. Foster caregivers receive a kit of starter supplies and access to a 24-hour help line for the kittens in their care.

Please consider becoming a foster caregiver for Nevada Humane Society today and experience the fulfillment of helping to save precious little lives. For more information, please call 856-2000, ext. 321.

This is the time of year when kittens begin arriving in large numbers at the Humane Society of the North Bay (Vallejo, California 94590), and shelters around the country.

These little ones look very cute, but they are also looking for help. Kittens who are too weak to take care of themselves; who are too young to be spayed or neutered; or who haven’t yet been weaned and don’t have a mother to feed them, all need the care of foster parents so they can begin to thrive.

Caring for these foster babies requires special training, and HSNB is now offering classes for interested volunteers. Veteran kitten foster parent Margo Adams, CCH will teach you the essentials of handling, feeding and socializing kittens, along with other tips for raising kittens from ages anywhere between newborn and 12 weeks.

Class attendance is mandatory before becoming a foster parent. Attendees will receive an HSNB Kitten Foster Training Manual.

The foster experience requires time and commitment, but it’s an incredibly rewarding feeling to raise a needy kitten into a playful, healthy friend ready for a forever home.

Classes in April will be offered on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, April 13th, 6:00 pm
  • Saturday, April 23rd, 11:00 am

All classes are held at the Humane Society of the North Bay, 1121 Sonoma Blvd (corner of Sonoma and Solano Avenue) in Vallejo.

Please RSVP to Volunteer Coordinator Lacey Garza by email or by calling 707.645.7905, ext. 114.

From the Humane Society Naples

As you know, springtime is kitten time, and The Humane Society Naples (Naples, Florida 34104) is going to need all paws on deck to serve as kitten foster families!

I’ve set a goal of adopting out at least 500 kittens and will need your help in caring and preparing these little babies for thier new lives as adopted pets.

If you haven’t ever volunteered here or if you’ve been absent for more than a year but want to be a kitten foster parent, you must first attend our Volunteer Recruitment Presentation.  The next one is this Saturday, April 9th at 10 a.m.

There is no pre-registration or form to fill out, just come to our community room on Saturday, listen to a short presentation and then decide how you want to help our shelter. The process usually takes less than 90 minutes.

We really need your help this kitten season. If you can’t foster but would like to help us purchase critical supplies used to foster a litter (such as kitten formula, baby bottles, etc.) please consider an online gift to help secure these things that are not regularly donated to our shelter. Thank you very much and be sure to come by to see our kittens!

From Nikole Nichols, Community Program Manager, Nevada Humane Society

Can you provide a warm spot in the sun for a blind kitty? How about opening your home to an older kitty on daily thyroid medication? Maybe you could bring love and peace to a kitty in his final days?  Whatever the reason, cats like these are looking for a heart to claim and a lap to call their own. Could yours be it?

These kitties are not for everyone, but we know that there is someone out there who could open their heart and home to one of them! So, this week we are sharing the stories of a few special cats who need a foster caregiver who will not be put off by their unique needs.

Would you like to learn more about some of our special-needs cats, such as Tucker, pictured below? From a diabetic cat who needs daily insulin to one with skin allergies, each one has some special health challenge and requires some extra care or TLC.

Tucker is a 5-year-old orange tabby with a sensitive stomach. She is on a special diet that requires prescription food, which we will provide. Tucker prefers to be the only cat in a household so she can have all your attention.

Nevada Humane Society will provide all medical care, medication, special food, or any other requirements for your new feline friend for the entire time the kitty is in your home.

If you could consider providing a temporary foster home to one of these cats, you can come in and visit with them any time—we are open seven days a week. One of our Cat Caregivers or Adoption Counselors can help you find these or other special needs cats and help identify the best match for you. For more information, you can also e-mail me, Nikole Nichols, or call me Monday through Friday at 775-856-2000 ext. 321.

The Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments Regional Animal Shelter (Dayville, Connecticut 06241) has been overwhelmed with drop-offs of stray cats recently; currently more than 50 cats are in residence. The number is bad enough, but the NECCOG Animal Shelter was designed strictly as a shelter for dogs.

Shelter staff are doing their best to cat for their new feline friends, but they need your help. If you can provide a permanent or foster home for a cat, please contact the shelter at 860-774-1253.
